Introducing Children to the world of boats

Kevin the Canvas Canoe and his Friends Series

a series of books written by Author Nigel Reed and illustrated by his Wife

The stories I have written and my wife has illustrated, introduce children (ages 4-8) to a nautical world through the adventures of anthropomorphic characters – Yasmin the Yacht, Robert the Racing Dinghy, Kevin the Canvas Canoe etc. Primarily designed to entertain – with full colour illustrations on every printed page, they also familiarise children with the world of boats and have a light allegorical message.

Set fair at Coquet Yacht Club

Original Article:

Years of hard work have paid off at Coquet Yacht Club after it achieved Royal Yachting Association training centre status, only awarded to accredited establishments which meet rigorous safety and teaching standards.

“Coquet Yacht Club is, and will continue to be, a well-established centre for offshore sailing in the region and taking the club on towards RYA Training Centre status seemed a natural progression,” said club Commodore Richard Hope.

“It has taken a lot of hard work by a dedicated team, led chiefly by Mark Phillips, our training centre principal, and driven by our past Commodore Phil Derry, but the club has been transformed in the past two years.”

This Autumn (the precise date in November to be confirmed), world renowned yachting and wildlife photographer Rick Tomlinson will be again back in Newcastle. Rick will be showing images and talking about the last Volvo Ocean Race where he was the official photographer to the all girl SCA team. The object of this exercise is, as always, to (apart from having an enjoyable evening) help raise funds for our local RNLI branch.

The day after the talk, Rick has offered to conduct a photography workshop on the water in a fast but stable powerboat if there is sufficient interest. The cost of this would be approx £250-00 per person. If anyone is interested in learning from this internationally famous photographer, could they please email This email address is being protected from spambots.
